“In Our Shoes” Special Screening

“In Our Shoes” Special Screening – Voicing the Void hosted by Ballynafeigh Community Development Association

As part of Good Relations Week 2024, which embraces the theme ‘OpportUNITY’, we’re excited to present “In Our Shoes: Bridging Policing and Local Communities”, a collaborative project between Voicing the Void, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), and the South Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership. This event, hosted by Ballynafeigh Community Development Association, aligns perfectly with OpportUNITY’s call to action—to create a brighter, more inclusive future where every voice matters.

At this event, we will showcase a series of short films alongside a powerful spoken word piece. In this piece, women who have made the journey from Syria discuss the challenges and trauma they endured, but also their hopes for a new life in Belfast—one where they can feel safe, rebuild their lives, and contribute to a welcoming community.

These powerful stories shed light on the challenges refugees and asylum seekers face while navigating the asylum system, and celebrate the resilience and strength they embody in the face of adversity.

In Dawson’s story, we witness his decade-long journey through the asylum system, offering a raw perspective on the frustrations and barriers he and his family have encountered while integrating into a new society. His narrative fosters empathy and highlights the injustices asylum-seekers endure.

Fatima, born in Northern Ireland to a diverse heritage, bravely confronts the Islamophobia, racism, and hate crimes she has experienced throughout her life. Despite these challenges, she now advocates for asylum-seekers and refugees, ensuring others don’t face the same hardships. Her story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

Mimi shares a story of hope and ambition. As an asylum seeker, Mimi embarked on a transformative journey that led her to found her own organisation, Bomoko NI. Her film highlights the resilience and determination required to build a new life in an unfamiliar place.

These stories, part of the “In Our Shoes” project, aim to inspire empathy, understanding, and social change. By working together and sharing personal narratives, we foster greater understanding and stronger relationships between diverse communities and the PSNI. In line with the ‘OpportUNITY’ theme, our hope is to inspire meaningful change across Northern Ireland, building a more cohesive and inclusive society.
