Green & Blue

Green & Blue explores the painful and humorous realities faced by the individuals who patrolled the border during the height of the conflict.

Written by Laurence McKeown, Directed by Paula McFetridge

An officer from the Royal Ulster Constabulary in his green uniform and Eddie from An Garda Síochána, resplendent in blue, communicate via crackly radios until an explosive incident forces them to meet across a field only farmers know the location of.

Focusing on what it’s like to be hunted when you’re protecting a man-made line on the ground, the play looks at the societal and human cost of borders.

Green & Blue is based on real-life interviews with former serving officers.

Higgins and Doran give engaging performances as the men unable to cross a line that only wise men and farmers can see. It’s a simple but effective way of exploring two sides of one conflict. – BELFAST TELEGRAPH

Al Taaleem Weekend Arabic Culture and Language School

We would like to share our Al Taaleem Weekend Arabic Culture and Language School in this event through a short film.

The school was set up by NI Hyatt, a social enterprise focused on supporting and providing a voice to vulnerable members of the refugee and migrant communities.

Every Saturday morning for the last two and a half years, two classes – a primary age class and a secondary age class – have been held at Emmanuel Church in Lurgan, led by a group of four dedicated volunteers. They deliver classes to teach Arabic speaking children and children from other backgrounds who are interested in learning about Arabic culture and language. Most of the children come from a Muslim background but there are also Christians and Kurdish as well as other religions.

It’s not only about classroom-based activities, they go on trips as well. For example, the mums and children went on a trip to the Ulster American Folk Park where they enjoyed learning about local culture, history and what happened during the famine. It’s all about fun, learning the language but also establishing friendships. It’s also about making the non-Arabic speaking children part of the group, learning from each other, and sharing experiences.

The project helps the Arabic speaking children to hold onto their heritage and sense of the culture they come from, it also boosts their confidence and sense of belonging. The children participate in local events, such as singing at local performances, or taking part in sports events such as football games. It builds their confidence, helps them to keep their language and gives them the opportunity to share their culture with others in an open and inclusive environment.

Youth In Action, Short Film – Rio Ferdinand Foundation

NI Hyatt Football Tournament 2021: The initiative was part of the Youth In Action programme, in collaboration with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation and UEFA Foundation with the aim to train and support young people by developing leadership skills and taking a lead in tackling inequality and racism in their own communities in Northern Ireland and Ireland.

15 young people from the Syrian refugee community completed a qualification and worked with the NI Hyatt team, partners and volunteers to deliver a family football and cultural event in Portadown People’s Park.

The short film, funded by the Rio Ferdinand Foundation in collaboration with partners and produced by 906 Film, is being promoted to showcase and celebrate the exceptional work carried out by the group so far. This initiative marks the cornerstone of what is planned to be an ongoing programme of youth led citizenship and social action to create a fairer and more inclusive society.
