In recognition of the UNCRC and children and young people rights to celebrate their culture, NICCY and its Youth Panel looked at the right of the child to explore and celebrate their cultural identity and to recognise the right of others to celebrate theirs. In the centenary year since the creation of Northern Ireland, members of the NICCY Youth Panel, in partnership with the Nerve Centre and the Making the Future Project, created a series of podcasts, sharing their personal thoughts on culture and identity.

The 1st in our week of podcasts looks at ‘The Next Generation.’ where we are joined people from the ages of 16-18 who express their culture positively and where they see the future.

This episode features Sollus Highland Dancers teacher Emily Peart and young band members Cameron Burgess from the William King Memorial Flute Band Londonderry and Jessica Porter from the Churchill Flute band.

The 2nd in our week of podcasts features Sean French, a PHD student from Cambridge University who is studying about marching bands. Find out what Sean knew about bands before his studies and has learnt in the last few months as he integrates himself into the Northern Ireland marching band scene.

The 4th in our week of podcasts looks at ‘Band Life During and After Lockdown’ this podcast looks at how band life halted for so many in March 2020 and how bands did virtual performances and the challenges in bringing the band back in Summer 2021.

In this podcast, Londonderry Bands are joined by Stephen Bailie from Ballywalter Flute Band and Matthew Warwick from Castlegore Flute Band and are both committee members for the Flute Band Association of NI.

This podcast looks back at the 2019 Síamsa Sráide Street Festival Swinford as the Hamilton Flute Band participate in a Concert and Street Parade in Swinford County Mayo.

A series of 5 podcasts were released throughout Good Relations Week looking at the work of the Bands Forum over the past 10 years and its work during lockdown.

In the final podcast for Good Relations Week, Derek Moore of the North West Cultural Partnership was in discussion with Steven Travers of the Miami Show Band. They discussed a wide range of topics around marching bands from the repertoire of the bands to the memberships of the bands. They looked at the history and the culture of marching bands here in the City of Londonderry and discussed the work of the Londonderry Bands Forum.

The fourth in our series of podcasts is presented by Stephen Porter, Co-Ordinator, Londonderry Bands Forum. Stephen was joined by Alex Dougherty, a student from Foyle College in Londonderry looking back at her time at the school, studying for A Levels during lockdown and her future prospects both inside and outside of Northern Ireland as she prepares to start a history degree at Lancaster University. Alex is also an ambassador Holocaust regional ambassador for Northern Ireland
