Irish Storytime

Libraries NI has partnered with Glor Uachta Tire to deliver a storytime in Irish for children age 5-8 read by Mary McMurragh to promote Irish language in the community.

This will be held in Castelwellan Library at 5pm

Booking essential, limited to 6 adults, one adult per family.

Kingdom Youth Club are hosting a ‘Hunger for Peace Games’ event at Dunavil.

The Boundary Commission and South Armagh & South Down – Lecture

The lecture titled “The Boundary Commission and South Armagh & South Down: Were the Wishes of the Inhabitants Compatible with Economic and Geographic Considerations?” will be delivered by Dr. Cormac Moore, Historian-in-Residence, Dublin City Council.

The Museum will host a talk on the setting up of Northern Ireland, specifically the work of the Boundary Commission.

This lecture will highlight the debates in south Armagh & south Down areas surrounding the economic and geographic considerations to changes to the border.

The talk is free and will take place online, via Microsoft Teams.

A Shared History of Border Areas – Newry, Mourne & Down District Council

As part of Good Relations Week 2021, this event will provide an opportunity to bring women from different communities together to take part in a presentation and a brief discussion about living in border areas. Participants will have an opportunity to share their own stories about living in border counties, the challenges they faced, the contributions made, as well as reflect on ways they can continue to build positive and sustainable relationships with other communities.

The event will promote good relations by bringing women from different backgrounds together to share experiences and celebrate positive changes their contributions have made, and encourage ways to continue to build positive and sustainable relationships with other communities.

This event is in person, however can also be joined virtually.

Flags, Identity and History

Newry, Mourne & Down District Council presents a facilitated workshop for a group of young people in partnership with the Education Authority. The workshop will focus on flags, identity and shared history, encouraging respect and understanding among our young people.

 

Cathedral Community Association Street Party

The Cathedral Community Street party aims to bring the community residents together by working together to achieve a shared vision – a street party!

Working together towards a common goal improves relations between all residents – young and old and people of different beliefs and backgrounds and promotes an inclusive community.

The street party cultivates a sense of pride in community whilst empowering residents to take responsibility and ownership of their community. It also provides them with a sense of leadership and educational opportunities and promotes emotional health and well-being.

 

Learning African Culture through art & music

As part of Good Relations Week 2021, primary school children will have the opportunity to experience African culture within a different environment through art.

Participants will take part in a music class and learn the skills of African drumming. They will also learn about African heritage and the importance of African masks, participants will finish the class by designing their own masks.

Chinese Cultural Awareness Day

As part of Good Relations Week 2021, Chinese Cultural Awareness Day will provide young primary school children with opportunity to experience the culture within a different environment through the art.  Participants will take part in a music class and learn the skills of Chinese Dancing. They will also learn about Chinese culture & heritage and the importance of dance to their culture. Following which they will design their own masks

 

Mexican Dancing – Learning culture through dance & art

A Mexican dancing class will be held as part of Good Relations Week 2021, to promote learning more about Mexican culture through dance & art.

The initiative is aimed at providing young primary school children with an opportunity to experience the culture within a different environment through the art.

Participants will take part in a music class and learn the skills of Mexican dance.  They will also learn about Mexican heritage and the importance of dance to their community.

Irish & Ulster Scots Cultural Exhibition

As part of Good Relations Week 2021 – Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will be hosting an Irish / Ulster Scots Cultural Exhibition.

The exhibition will offer our shared community the opportunity to appreciate and experience a mixture of Irish & Ulster Scots music, dance and poetry interpretation.
