The greater East Belfast area is awash with interesting placenames. Most of these placenames are versions of very old Gaelic placenames that may have been first used hundreds of years ago some possibly dating back to early Christian times or pagan times.
Names like Knocknagoney, Braniel, Lisnabreeny and Tullycarnet are not just random syllables and sounds but have origins and meanings and have survived down through the centuries to give us a rich tapestry of often unique names for the places where we live, work and travel.
