The Maiden City Educational and Community Heritage Project will explore the history of the Siege of Londonderry through a historian-led workshop, a visit to the Siege Museum and a guided tour of the historic Maiden City.
The Maiden City Educational and Community Heritage Project is being delivered as part of Good Relations Week by Steeple Veterans Flute Band in partnership with Steeple Community Association, Radius Housing and Clanmil Housing. The project will provide participants with an opportunity to explore the history of the Siege of Londonderry, the history of the Maiden City and the cultural traditions that developed from these events.
The first element of the project will take place on 13 October 2026, when participants will attend a historian-led workshop delivered by Bygone Days Consulting. The workshop will explore the Siege of Londonderry from different perspectives and examine the origins of the cultural and commemorative traditions associated with these events.
The second element will take place on 17 October 2026, when participants will visit the Siege Museum and take part in a guided exploration of the historic Maiden City.
The project aims to help participants move beyond a superficial understanding of their history and culture, encouraging a more informed understanding of local heritage and traditions. It will also bring adults, children and families together through a shared educational experience, promote intergenerational learning and make cultural education more accessible by removing transport and associated cost barriers to participation.
