The St Comgall’s story: from dereliction to transformation

Gerry McConville from Falls Community Council in conversation with William Mitchell from the ACT Initiative.

The event will explore the lessons learned from the long journey of the transformation of St Comgall’s which began with Eileen Howell’s vision over twenty years ago. This is a story of how the derelict school building in Divis Street was transformed into a site of community excellence, acting as a gateway to the city centre and West Belfast and opening up new possibilities for the area. The speakers will discuss the current challenges facing good relations work, against the background of the present testing climate for the sector.

Followed by refreshments and tour for those interested.

She helped develop the first integrated primary school outside of Belfast, and actively participated in cross-community organisations including Women Together, the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition, and Community Dialogue. She has helped train women in mediation and conflict transformation and taught them leadership skills and public speaking, as well as how to build up their confidence.  She has lobbied and challenged politicians to take risks for peace.

The talk will be followed by a Q & A session.

This is a FREE event, organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in conjunction with Fermanagh and Omagh Interfaith group.

Debate Conference

Parallel Histories offers a new way to study the history of conflict – history which is still contested, controversial and relevant. Our teaching methodology challenges students to understand both sides, examine the source evidence and debate alternative interpretations before coming to their own view.

Our debating conference will invite seven schools from across Northern Ireland to join us in Stormont, the home of the Northern Ireland Assembly on Friday 22nd September 2023, 10am to 2pm for what promises to be a fantastic day of debate and discussion.

Introduced by Robbie Butler MLA, deputy leader of the UUP, the event gives the opportunity for schools across Northern Ireland to come together to share their own perspectives and interpretations of the contested history of Northern Ireland.
