Getting to know you and our City

Getting to know you and our City brings young people and older adults together from across the Council area to visit our City’s historic landmarks and to hear stories from the older generation about these landmarks.

The group will visit a number of historic landmarks with the older generation sharing their stories and life experiences about each of these monuments and museum content.

 

Celebrating Life – Derry Central Library

A Poetry Workshop with the RNIB. The Celebrating Life workshop examines a selection of life-affirming poetry, from the spiritual words of Rumi, to the guiding perspective of Mary Oliver and ending with the linguistic experimentation of E.E. Cummings.

‘Different Cultures, Similar Values’ – Exploring Inclusivity

The 2- hour workshop will combine African and Caribbean experience, poetry and song, video clips and audience interaction, with humour and challenge to open up candid dialogue.

The workshops will creatively present the dichotomy of the history and culture of the African and Caribbean communities in Belfast under the theme of ‘different cultures, similar values’; the same theme will be used to explore the underbelly of racism, focusing on inclusivity and barriers to such, exploring also black heritage and history and its significance for people from the African and Caribbean communities’ living in Belfast.

Strategies for addressing Anti-Muslim Hostility

These workshops will provide a brief overview of the history and diversity of the Muslim community in Belfast. It will provide an understanding of what constitutes anti-Muslim hatred, the demographics of perpetrators and victims, the trigger points, and the impact of online trends and far-right groups.  It will also provide practical skills for interrupting anti-Muslim hostility.

Good Relations Resource Pack Workshop

Members of the T:BUCC Camps Ambassadors programme are delivering a range of activities and sessions from the Good Relations Resource Pack to demonstrate how to best utilise the resource.

This is specifically targeted at training peer mentors, young leaders and volunteers who will assist with the future delivery of a T:BUCC Camps programme.

Small Worlds – Virtual Workshop

Small Words virtual workshop will provide opportunity to meet local individuals who come from other parts of the world and learn about their experiences and backgrounds.

There is a wide range of misconceptions of “other” communities and a need to create an understanding of others and reduce myths. Through round table discussions (virtual at this time) this Small Worlds event will allow participants to meet and engage with those who have come to settle here from other countries and cultures.

The workshop will provide a safe space for participants to encounter people from different parts of the world, managed by an experienced facilitator, and will give participants a glimpse into real lives including: growing up in a different part of the world, a different culture or religious background, a different environment or climate. living far away from your family and friends. challenges of being new to Northern Ireland. different reasons for moving to Northern Ireland.

Sexual Orientation and LGBTQ+ Family Awareness

This online workshop will discuss matters such as appropriate language and terminology in relation to sexual orientation, encourage people to to confront stereotypes they may have and give an introduction to LGBT parents and how to affirm these families.

It will also discuss the impact of homophobia and how to address barriers.
